| Lotus History
"Rules are there for the interpretation of wise men and the obedience of fools" - ACB Chapman
Lotus' founder, Anthony Colin Bruce Chapman (1928 - 1982) had one ambition: to build the best sports cars in the world. This ambition was the catalyst for the creation of ingenious designs, the development of innovative technology and the birth of the "Performance through Lightweight" philosophy. This fundamental notion was the main force that drove Lotus to secure a wealth of racing achievements but above all it was responsible for shaping one of the most successful Formula 1 teams of all time. Between the 1950s and the 1990s Lotus collected 79 Grand Prix wins, 7 Formula 1 Constructors' Championships, 6 Drivers' Championships and shaped the careers of some of the most successful drivers of all time including, Jim Clark, Graham Hill, Emerson Fittipaldi, Mario Andretti, Nigel Mansell, Ayrton Senna and Mika Hakkinen. Today, this same energy invigorates each Lotus Engineer from initial concept through design, development and construction; it provides every Lotus product with an unparalleled level of performance and excitement that cannot be matched by any other competitor.
What is a Lotus?
"A Lotus provides its owner with prestigious, efficient transport. Prestige is given by exclusive, trend setting styling and racing heritage. Efficiency is obtained from effective use of lightweight materials giving maximum return for fuel burned in the engine and supreme cornering power" - ACB Chapman
A Lotus is an exclusive blend of racing heritage, competitiveness, passion, eccentric innovation, radical technology and extreme performance that has changed the rules for sports cars. Lotus is a "rebel" that has stepped away from conformity to create automotive jewels that stand out from the crowd and can only be judged in a class of their own. A Lotus is all about finesse, response, feedback and composure; it is a driver's car since it is developed by drivers, for drivers. A Lotus is about driver involvement, undiluted by excessive servo assistance, ride compliance or electronic aids; it satisfies highly skilled drivers and flatters those with less experience by encouraging the desire to raise skills through the purity of its performance. With a Lotus, stability does not degrade with speed and feedback is communicated without kickback to provide exceptional handling at all times. With a Lotus, more of its performance can be used for more of the time and high average speeds can be achieved without high maximum speeds with no sudden or unexpected changes in character.
Performance through Lightweight"
"The most elegantly effective and traditionally Lotus solution is the one with the least number of parts, effectively deployed" - ACB Chapman
The Lotus philosophy is to use as few individual components as possible since performance is achieved through lightweight and thoughtful design. This fundamental principle drives the continuous and incessant research & development of novel applications, revolutionary concepts and design breakthroughs that are exploited to increase performance. A Lotus is based upon a constant technological revolution in order to set new benchmarks for modern sports cars; it is designed and developed to be responsive, fun and involving to own and drive by offering phenomenal performance, inspiring feedback and unrivalled dynamic agility. The "Performance through Lightweight" philosophy along with the brand values of "Elegant Simplicity" and "Technical Innovation" allow Lotus to manufacture some of the finest award-winning sports cars in the world.
